Grasso’s Garage: Lexus’ luscious luxury with LC convertible

I was a fan right when this one arrived.

Lexus, the luxury brand of Toyota, is known for stylish exteriors balanced with great comfort and well-thought-out interior features.

Now do it in a convertible.

But this isn’t your average, everyday top-down, grocery-getting pretend convertible — this is a 471-hp convertible.

Your hair will be blowing one way or another. Its snarling 5.0L naturally aspirated V-8 engine really enjoys going fast. With the top down, the exhaust noise is sure to keep your ears happy, too.

Its wide, sleek, low body is not derived from another chassis, yet is its own configuration just for the LC.

A 10-speed electronically controlled direct-shift transmission is smooth and effortless; magnesium paddle shifters are standard.

For Lexus, in attempts to keep up with BM...

What do you mean you don’t see them!? They’re everywhere!

A man who had been doing meth for about two days opened fire on what he thought were thieves trying to break into his LaGrange, Ind., home, but the people turned out to be completely imaginary. After engaging in the gun battle with his hallucinations, he ran outside, where the cops found him yelling and swinging a broom handle.

HMMM, COOLER THAN I EXPECTED: At a gas station in England, an elderly man mistook a slushy machine for a hand sanitizer dispenser and squirted a good amount of ice-cold raspberry slush onto his hands.

WHAT ARE YOU, AN EXPERT? In Japan, where the theft of women’s panties is not uncommon, a man stole a G-string from the balcony of a ground-floor, Matsuyama apartment, where it was hanging out to dry...

The ‘Filthy Rich’ have their troubles in new Fox series

Wealthy people’s problems have fueled some of television’s most popular series, and a new show is aiming to join those ranks.

Originally intended for last season, “The Help” filmmaker Tate Taylor’s “Filthy Rich” helps Fox’s pandemic-impacted fall lineup as it debuts Monday. Also one of its producers, “Sex and the City” alum Kim Cattrall heads the cast as a wealthy Southern family’s matriarch who suddenly loses her husband (Gerald McRaney) … but surprisingly gains three relatives, the illegitimate children named in his will. Immediately, all concerned move into action to retain what they feel is rightfully theirs, which doesn’t match up in most cases.

  • Kim Cattrall stars in ‘Filthy Rich,’ premiering Monday on Fox.

Sadie Dupuis offers bright songs about dark times

Sadie Dupuis loves pop. The singer-songwriter-guitarist who records as Sad13 when not working with her Northampton-based band Speedy Ortiz also knows life is a hellscape of chaos and cruelty. These two things — sweet-as-candy hooks and the madness of our modern moment — come together with purpose on Sad13’s sophomore album “Haunted Painting” (out Friday).

“I love things that sound bright,” Dupuis said. “But, as someone who really likes pop music and big hooks and is anxiously preoccupied with dystopian presents and futures, I think there is an intentional juxtaposition in (my music in) most places. I don’t want to do a song about climate change that sounds apocalyptic. I’d rather talk about these things while giving people a reprieve with some fun synths and drum programming...

Trump vows female Supreme Court nominee ‘next week’ as Democrats hit back

President Trump wants to move on a Supreme Court nominee “without delay” after the death of Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg — and Democrats are beginning a full-court press against him as the issue roils an already intense election.

“I will be putting forth a nominee next week,” Trump said at a North Carolina rally on Saturday, after tweeting earlier that he wants to move “without delay.”

“It will be a woman,” he said at the rally. “A very talented, very brilliant woman.”

Ginsburg, 87, died Friday night following a battle with pancreatic cancer — just a month and a half before the Nov. 3 presidential election. It was reportedly her dying wish that she not be replaced “until a new president is installed.”

The 2020 presidential race has focused primarily i...

‘Hit ’em!’ Stars hammer Tampa 4-1 to open Stanley Cup Final

EDMONTON, Alberta — Dallas Stars players on the bench yelled at their teammates, “Hit ’em!” They did, over and over, the body checks and the shouts easily heard throughout an arena left empty because of the pandemic for this most unusual Stanley Cup Final.

The well-rested Stars came out and hammered the banged-up Tampa Bay Lightning, taking it to them for two periods and relying on goaltender Anton Khudobin to close the door in the third to win 4-1 Saturday night for a 1-0 lead. By the time the talented Lightning got rolling, it was too late.

“I don’t even know if you need to take a shower after the first two periods,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said...

Red Sox on brink of being swept by Yankees in 2020 with 8-0 loss

The Red Sox have one more chance to beat the Yankees this season.

In what’s been a season of franchise-record lows, the Red Sox have been thoroughly dominated by the Yankees. In a week, the Yanks will likely be off to the postseason, while the Red Sox go home for a long offseason. In the meantime, the Yankees are running all over their AL East rivals, and after an 8-0 victory on Saturday night, they’re a win on Sunday away from sweeping all 10 games in the season series.

Here were the takeaways as the Red Sox were shut out for the first time this season:

Another painful reminder

Before Saturday’s game, Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke was asked how much separates his last-place club and the Rays and Yankees, who hold the top two spots of the division...

Celtics take Game 3 over Miami, 117-106

Their most emotional night of the season behind them – every team has some scarring, said Brad Stevens – the Celtics came out in even-tempered, efficient form Saturday night.

Gone were the runs on turnovers, the blown leads and, especially, confusion against Miami’s 3-2 zone. Jaylen Brown attacked the rim in a 26-point, 11-for-16 performance that exposed soft spots in the zone, and Gordon Hayward stepped on the floor for the first time since Game 1 of the first round.

The playmaking forward played a big role against the zone in the Celtics 117-106 Game 3 win over Miami, cutting the Heat’s Eastern Conference Finals lead to 2-1.

Jayson Tatum scored 25 points and put together another dominant all-around night, also with 14 rebounds and eight assists...

Bettman: Next NHL season could start in December or January

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Gary Bettman will take his first sigh of relief in months when he presents the Stanley Cup.

“Maybe I’ll get a full night sleep,” the NHL Commissioner said.

Maybe one, and then the work begins on next season. Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly had more questions of their own than answers next season, though it’s always been questionable if it will start on Dec. 1 as tentatively planned.

Bettman on Saturday raised the possibility of a start sometime later in December or even January, though the plan remains for each team to play 82 games and the league hold a full playoffs.

Much like its plan to resume this season, the league hopes to adapt to the pandemic circumstances in the U.S...

Q&A: What does banning TikTok and WeChat mean for users?

The U.S. government is cracking down on the Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat, starting by barring them from app stores on Sunday.

President Donald Trump has cited concerns about Chinese government snooping as his administration prepares to follow through on executive orders that could make it increasingly difficult, if not impossible, for Americans to use the apps.

Trump has also floated a potential way out, at least for TikTok, which on Friday he called an “amazing company” that is “very, very popular.”

Here are some questions and answers about the deal.

The order disallowing TikTok and WeChat from smartphone app stores takes effect Sunday, as do additional restrictions on the use of WeChat.

A broader ban on the use of...
