Lakers roll past Nuggets 126-114 in West finals opener

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Slow starters in the first two rounds, the Los Angeles Lakers appeared to be in a hurry to put away the Denver Nuggets.

It was a strong statement to their opponent — and maybe to the NBA’s MVP voters.

Anthony Davis had 37 points and 10 rebounds, LeBron James added 15 points and 12 assists hours after finishing a distant second in the MVP voting, and the Lakers rolled to a 126-114 victory on Friday night in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

The top-seeded Lakers opened a double-digit lead in the first half that they easily extended in the third quarter.

“It took a quarter for us to kind of figure it out,” James said. “Not saying we fully figured them out because it’s too early in the series to say that, but we started to get a better feel...

The Latest: Obama says GOP must be consistent on court vote

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (all times local):

12:05 a.m. Saturday

Former President Barack Obama is calling Ruth Bader Ginsburg “a relentless litigator and an incisive jurist” who “inspired generations, from the tiniest trick-or-treaters to law students burning the midnight oil to the most powerful leaders in the land.”

Obama issued a statement Friday after Ginsburg’s death from cancer complications at age 87. He says Ginsburg should be remembered for fighting to the end of her life, through her cancer “with unwavering faith in our democracy and its ideals.”

Hot fuzz: Massachusetts State Police troopers rescue kittens from burning car

A couple of kittens are surely thankful for their nine lives tonight after state troopers smashed the window of a burning car to rescue the pair of frightened felines following a brief highway chase.

Just after 4 p.m. Friday, police tried to stop a gray 2004 Nissan Maxima that had no inspection sticker and whose owner had a suspended license, state police said.

The driver, a 26-year-old Westford woman whom police did not name, refused to stop and led troopers on a pursuit, according to state police.

Troopers said they attempted to pounce when the driver pulled into the Natick service plaza, but when they approached her, the driver sped away and the chase resumed.

The woman soon stopped in a breakdown lane in Wayland, at which point the undercarriage of her car began smoking and caught on...

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died following a long battle with cancer, the court announced Friday night. She was 87.

Ginsburg was the second female justice on the court and was called a “jurist of historic stature” by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. in a statement.

Ginsburg was surrounded by her family at her home in Washington, D.C., Friday evening when she died due to complications of metastatic pancreatic cancer, according to a U.S. Supreme Court announcement.

“We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her — a tireless and resolute champion of justice,” Roberts added.

Her death now gives President Trump an opportunity to name her successo...

Drinking coffee linked to better survival in colorectal cancer patients, Dana Farber research shows

Getting a daily coffee fix could provide more than just a caffeine boost — it has been linked to better survival and lower risk of disease progression in metastatic colorectal cancer patients, new research from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute shows.

“Diet and lifestyle factors are strongly linked to both the risk of developing colorectal cancer as well as survival,” said Dr. Kimmie Ng, director of the Young-Onset Colorectal Cancer Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Ng and her colleagues found that in a large group of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, drinking a few cups of coffee a day — decaf or regular — was associated with longer survival and a lower risk of the cancer worsening.

“We were excited, actually, to see the results, and it does seem to show a dose resp...
