Thousands of free books to be given to Boston students at annual fair

Members of the Boston Teachers Union will give out 40,000 free books to local students and families at its annual back-to-school book fair on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

BTU is partnering with the American Federation of Techers and First Book along with Boston Partners in Education to distribute backpacks and school supplies as well.

Due to COVID-19, the fair will be scaled back this year and will follow social distancing and masking guidelines.

All families wishing to attend must have pre-registered and were allotted a time slot, according to a release from BTU.

Many BPS families are struggling financially, especially with the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus. The back-to-school event supports students in increasing their literacy by providing them access to books, said BTU.

The fair will take place at the Boston Teachers Union Hall, 180 Mount Vernon Street in Dorchester on Thursday and Friday from 2-6 pm and Saturday from 12-3 pm.
